Antwerp is one of Belgium’s leading economic engines, and its port is a major hub for the shipment of dry goods, cargo, chemicals and petroleum products. It is the second-largest cargo port in Europe and one of the most important logistics and distribution centers in the world. As a result, the Antwerp–Brussels corridor is a key section of European route E19, which stretches between Amsterdam and Paris.
Major industries in Antwerp—most of which are concentrated near the port—include diamonds, chemicals and oil refining. Antwerp sits 80.5 kilometers inland from the North Sea on the Scheldt river and benefits from a network of inland waterways that extend shipping’s reach into Europe’s interior.

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and its largest city, while Antwerp has the largest population in Flanders.
